How to Prepare for Your Home Remodel

Remodeling can be a stressful and overwhelming process, but with the right preparation and planning, you can assure the ideal outcome for your home renovation project. By considering these key factors - timing and scope, budget and price, and quality - you can prepare for your remodeling project and assure the ideal outcome.

Timing and Scope

Collaboration is key when it comes to remodeling. It's best to hire your interior designer and builder first so that they can work together towards your goals. Allow enough time to work with your designer to complete all the required drawings, selections, and details. For example, when remodeling your kitchen and master bath, you might need a few months of design time to design the layout and create your elevations and make all of your selections. The key selections that will be needed for the builder to get pricing would include appliances, cabinet door style and finish, plumbing, flooring, tile, and countertop material.

It's also important to allow enough time for your builder to complete their current commitments and slot you into their schedule.  When selecting your design and remodel team its important to think about hiring the right partners that you trust are working in your best interest to create the ideal outcome.

Budget/Price

Most homeowners have a budget in mind when it comes to remodeling, but it's important to make it realistic. Don't rely on budgets and timelines from shows on HGTV.  These often don't reflect the reality of remodeling projects, include labor costs, or show actual timelines. When determining your budget, consider the quality and longevity of the materials and finishes you choose. While it might be tempting to go for the lowest price, remember that the best outcome creates a seamless and consistent level of design and finish with the rest of your home.  Though remodeling is expensive right now, try to make selections that have the longevity that you will love for years to come.  It’s less expensive to do it right the first time and enjoy it for 15-20 years than to go inexpensive and want to change it in 3-5 years.

It's important to factor in quality and timing when determining your budget to ensure that you meet your expectations and that the job is done well.

Quality

Consider how long you plan to stay in your home when determining the quality level of your remodel. If you plan to remain in the home for 10 or 20 more years, you'll want to choose a builder with trades that will produce the outcome you desire.  Like most items from clothes to cars; the higher the quality of the materials and finishes that you choose will have more longevity and hold up better in the long run. This is especially true for the level of workmanship.  A really good installer can make a moderately priced material look even better!
